Default External Hard Drive for Backup

Question:

I am looking to purchase an external hard drive for purposes of backup. I am running Pro Tools 7.4 LE on an intel iMAC with dual 2.33 ghz processors and 3 gigs of RAM. I currently save all my audio on an external firewire 800 LACIE hard drive. Knock on wood, I have not had any issues with this setup. My question is this:

Do I need to purchase a firewire 800 external HD with the oxford chipset for my backup drive or can I use a firewire 400 drive or a USB 2.0 drive; also, do I need to obtain a drive with the oxford chipset for backup purposes.

I appreciate your input.

Thanks...

Paul

So long as you don't want to run sessions from the HD i.e purely to transfer and back-up, then a USB drive should be OK.

Why is that?

For the record, I've opened sessions that were saved on my hard drives (either in Firewire 400 or 800) and edited, mixed and bounced tracks.

Is this the incorrect way to work on a session, and if so, why?

Thanks.

I think you misread the post. He was speaking specifically about USB drives, not FW.
