Default 5th @*$!ing time this thing locked up today!ARGH!

i don't know what it is.

this is the 5th time this thing has locked up and crashed the whole system today.

Powerbook 667, 1/2 gig ram, 80gig maxtor firewire drive, Digi OO2, PTLE 6.1,OSX10.2.6:

i'm doing pre-production/ arrangements by copying scratch guit/vox tracks over a drum track.
a lot of cutting and pasting and nudging but with only a few tracks.
i'll work for like a half hour on getting synced up perfect - hit the space bar to play it and hear it...

and i get the spinning ball of death that brings down not only ProTools but crashes the whole machine while locking up the hard drive with a busy light.

i am so frustratd i could srcream.

this is not a heavy lifting job.

ARGHGHGH!

I was curious on how much RAM you have and (I know this is somewhat obvious) but do you have your firewire drive connected on its own port or between the computer and 002?
I hope you get this fixed!
LB.
Oops, I see you have a half gig of RAM...That is a little on the lean side for a 002 but still might get you going.

Hey, I've had the same problem, Then I moved my 002 to the end of the chain and that seems to take of it. I was using a DV Cam at the same time to digitize video via Final Cut to put into ProTools. But I still put the 002 at the end of the Firewire chain. No problem since. Hope this helps!

thank you for the responses.

i moved on to recording parts and it did not persist. it was happening when i was cutting and pasting like crazy.

i've been hitting the save button like a lab-monkey.

i'm going to change the firewire chain now and try it with the the hard drive first and the 002 second.

but i was pretty sure the manual stated explicitly that the 002 should always be first in any firewire chain.

it makes more sense with the hard drive as the first in the chain.
this way when you shut down the 002 - the drive is still accessible.

This is what my manual says: 002 ALWAYS last, BECAUSE it doesn't pass firewire signal when off.

Hi guys,

We always recommend placing your Firewire drive before the 002 in the FW chain.
This was mostlikely the problem you were having.
