PT8 input monitoring whilst in play mode

This is probably a basic question ,

I'm trying to record /input monitor an external audio synth in PT8

So i have selected the input channels on the track i would like to record on, patched the synth to those inputs etc

When I arm a track to record in PT8 i can monitor the input level of the external synth , set the level etc when protools is not playing.

If i start playing protools i can't monitor / hear the input on the audio channel unless I press recod on the transport bar and start recording.

I would like to be able to monitor in playmode , so i can adjust levels or just monitor untill i'm ready to record.

And if you want to change that input monitoring setting with your mouse, I think it's in the track menu.

Another trick is to create an aux track with the same input. Once you record the final, just delete the aux track.
