Default Digi 003 controls don't work and random freezes

OK, I've had the same issues for over a year now. I've jumped on various threads about issues to do with digi 003's with problems in windows 7 64, but never really got any specific help towards my issues, nor were the issues always the same. I've got a small window in which I could mess with my system without ruining the workflow of other things I do, so here's a specific thread for my issue along with a sandra report.

I see my digi 003 issues as two points:

1. Midi control - while the hard wired controllers such as the monitor and headphone volume controls work, any controllers controlling the software via midi eg: the volume faders, the transport controls... well just about every button on the 003, do no work. The faders will go up and down through automation, but you can't physically controll them yourself.

2. Random crashes. In particular when using other software such as Sony Vegas...welll to be honest even if it's just idling doing nothing with no applications open it can sometimes randomly crash. This can BSOD or can be just a freeze that will require restarting.

Now I've tried every version of Protools 8, every driver that was released. The latest attempt was when the windows 7 qualifed 8.04 was released... I even tried a complete fresh install... made no difference. Same issues I've been having ever since I bought it. As ridiculous as the idea is, I even tried taking out my wireless network card seeing that was a suggestion on DUC. No difference.

The faders and transport controls work fine on my windows xp 32 bit laptop running protools 8, so it's not an 003 hardware fault, instead it's an issue specific with windows 7 64 and/or my machine... or protools in general.

My sandra is below. Let me know if there's any other information you need. I'm really keen to fix this as it's sad having invested in the 003 only to find it's barely working properly as a soundcard let alone a control surface... combine that with the latest protools making my trusty original Mbox obsolete, and it's really not a good combo.

1. Midi control
I had this recently on Win7x64. I had multiple midi devices in Setup-Midi-Midi Studio using the same Midi-In port; and had midi-out assigned with no cable connected. I cleaned up the Midi Studio settings, rebooted, and my 002 now works again. Let me know if this helps you, or I just lucked out.

2. Random crashes. In particular when using other software such as Sony Vegas.
I would expect Pro Tools to crash with other software running. Thats why its called a Workstation and not an Application. I have a seperate system drive to run Adobe Premiere.
In respect to it crashing when just idle, have you done the Windows optimizations? The few times I run Pro Tools with other stuff running (Windows services, antivirus, network, etc) I expect Pro Tools to crash and am happily suprised when it doesn't (sometimes). I use Black Viper optimizations as well.

Mike.

What driver version you running (in Device Manager)? I had big problems getting drivers to stick (actually I think it may have been the uninstall of the old driver) until I ran Windows in optimized mode; then uninstalled; and re-ran all setups. I rebooted at every opportunity between the different setup's.

My x64 002 driver is: 8.0.4.354.
Not sure if that indicates anything in respect to your 003. Can you download the seperate driver install that was released with PT9?
Maybe best to wait for a 003 user to reply with their drv ver.

Mike.

Sounds a bit obvious, but are you sure you are using 64 bits drivers? You can't install 32 bits drivers on a 64 bits OS. They will either not work, or will make your system unstable.

There are a lot of us with a $2000 dongle. Open a ticket with Avid. The more they hear about it, hopefully, the faster they will get it fixed.
