Default Unable to reinstall PT9 on Mac/Sierra

Hi all,

I've got a quite old Macbook Pro (Mid 2011) running Sierra and it was working ok with PT9 until today.

Unfortunately I had to do a reinstall of PT9 from disc and the installer told me the OS was incompatible.

I'm retired now and only dabble but I still want to use PT occasionally.

I investigated and found that PT9 shouldn't have been working at all with Sierra, but it was up until today.

I've got a full backup of my Macbook's SSD so I can "roll back" but I'd prefer not to as it's quite a lengthy process.

Any suggestions?

Also, while I'm here... if I decided to upgrade to a more recent version of Pro Tools, which version would I need? I'd want to buy outright rather than pay a sub each year.

Thanks in advance, Andy.

Yep I had a read through that and it does indicate that PT9 shouldn't work with Sierra... but it was working with Sierra, and I'd just like to get it back to that state.

I'll upgrade if I absolutely have to but I'd prefer not to.

Some info on upgrading to a more recent version of Pro Tools would be useful - which version would I need? I'd want to buy outright rather than pay a sub each year.

It's pretty near absolutely need to thing right now. Avid also stopped selling reinstatement plans which means once resellers run out you cannot upgrade your license to current version. It should still be possible now but nobody knows how long.

Ah thanks that's useful to know.

If I bought it now would I be able to download earlier versions of PT or just the latest version? (listed as Pro Tools 2019.10 for Sierra)

I'm not sure my creaking old Macbook Pro would cope with recent versions.

Avid Download Center has versions from 12.6 to current, but if you need something older you can ask Avid Support

As to why the op's install of PT9 & Sierra worked I'm going to say that PT9 was probably installed when said MBP had a compatible OSX on it and that in-situ installs were done. This perfectly illustrates why going things the Apple Way isn't good with music software.

Good news: Sweetwater apparently still has some reinstatement plans available for $299 US plus whatever tax in one's jurisdiction.

Thanks for all the help guys.

I caved in and rolled my Macbook Pro back using Carbon Copy Cloner, and it's working again.

I'll check into Sweetwater and other retailers... I did some more reading about buying and it does seem like this will be the last chance to actually buy and own PT.

I'll also look around for older versions for sale on fleabay etc.

Thanks again.

Actually I think you'll still be able to buy and own PT outright without a reinstatement but you'd be paying full price for it just like if you purchased it new. Sweetwater has Ultimate Perpetual for $2599 and vanilla perpetual for $599. Both are non-subscription.

I have a MBP mid 2010 and have my SSD partitioned into 2 virtual drives. One has High Sierra for internet and most other modern stuff and the other is a Lion partition specifically so I can still use my old PTHD10 license that I never upgraded.
