actually, they ended up not saying much and no one had any ab comparisons. i'm surprised there's not more info on the quality of ad conversion, it's such a hige factor

I've seen a few comparisons that place the RME ADI-8 up there (and in some respects, higher than) the AD8000. Anyone heard it?

There was a PDF file out there but I don't know where it is right of hand. It is done by a supposed non biased audiophile. ADI Pro ranked very well, especially for the price.
2 RME @ 1400=$2800+$800 24 bit ADAT bridge.
$3600 versus $5000 8 channel Apogee.
I'd like to here some AB tests.

I think the PDF is the thing i've seen. Lots of comparisons that show the RME to be technically better in some areas, but slightly worse in others. UV22 is a big plus for the ADI-8. Might get an ADi-8, and a rosetta! Anyone HEARD the RME?

The only thing that concerns me is the RME's jitter reduction does not seem to be as good as the Apogee's. I use my USD a lot to lock to 2" tape, and I wonder if the RME's sonic edge might be negated by a jittery USD word clock.

Well, on the basis of these reviews, I bought an ADI -8 Pro. Sounds great to me, but then I don't have an Apogee sitting idly by for comparison purposes either.

The .pdf that I read was from a review in either a German or Danish magazine - it wasn't just an 'appraisal' by a user. I also thought that from what I read, the RME came out in front in most areas, not some, and that the minuses were more to do with "extras" that the Apogee offered, rather than deficincies on the part of the RME.

I'm not sure I understand the thinking behind looking into both a Rosetta and an RME. For example, on the review I saw, the RME has a better (more stable, lower jitter) clock, and as the Rosetta has no clock in, you'd have to clock the RME from the Rosetta, thereby losing one of the RME's plusses.

There's also an RME 2channel unit, but according to the company, it's slightly different than the 8 channel unit and, reading between the lines, not quite as good. I don't have the info to hand at the moment to be more specific.

Peter

Good point. Going back to the notorious comparison .pdf, it's not obvious what conclusions they draw - except that the RME has no jitter reduction circuitry as such.

FWIW, the other A/D/A that we seriously looked at was the 2 channel unit from Digital Audio Denmark. The reviews on that (they sent me a bundle) were very very good, and a few had direct comparisons with various Apogees. Around the same price as the Rosetta, but closer to the PSX100 or similar units in features.

Peter
