Welcome to ICON land, David! At this time, region movement with jog wheel is not implemented. We added Zooming, Navigational, scrolling, banking/nudging abilities to the jog wheel in PT 7.2, and will continue to explore more uses of the jog wheel in ongoing releases.

Cheers!

Hi David,

Jogwheel functionality has improved over time since D control first hit the market. And since version 7.2 it has actually become very usefull for editing purposes as well.

Now ... compared to what some systems can do with their wheel, functionality when it comes down to specific editing tasks like moving regions remains basic for now. I for one certainly welcome the demand for it from people like yourself.

The biggest 'issue' with moving regions at this point is that you cannot 'stick' a region to the wheel ... move it around and 'drop' it where you want.

BUT .... that said .... you can actually move your regions around and drop them where you want through what I would call 'an elegant workaround'.

A couple of things which are important to know before getting a feel of how to do it :

- 'link track and edit selection' ... you will want that preference to be enabled
- the 'IN' and 'OUT' button can be used to make a selection and move it. When in 'grid mode' the movement of the wheel is linked to your grid setting.

Now since regions don't 'stick' to the wheel, but you can make selections with the wheel, you can copy or cut whatever is included in that selection and paste it at another point in time or on another track.

A simple example to demonstrate :

I'm going to use 'bars & beats' as th main timeline setting and presume that your grid is set to 1/4 notes. Grid mode is enabled and track selection is linked to edit selection.

Lets say you have a session with a bunch of tracks and you would like to move whatever region or regions are located on track 4 between bar 9 and 16 to bar 35.

Execute these steps :

1. press the select button on track 4 on the D control channel strip.

Note that your cursor now is located on track 4.

2. hold both the 'IN' and 'OUT' button and turn the wheel and navigate the cursor to bar 9.

if you set your grid to 1/4 notes and grid mode is enabled you will see that you can navigate to bar 9/1/1 in 1/4 note increments.

3. hold the 'OUT' button and turn the wheel clockwise to bar 16.

You will see the selection expand to bar 16/1/1

4. press 'command + x or just x (depending wether keyboard focus is on) to cut the selection.

5. Hold the 'IN' + 'OUT' button and navigate to bar 35/1/1

6. press command + v or v (keyboard focus) to paste.

You just moved whatever region or regions where included in the selection you made.

This example should give you a basic feel of what kind of moving regions you can do with the wheel. Now I can hear you coming and tell me that you could have done this with the trackball as well right ?

Yeah well that is true. But there's many situations where it can work better then the trackball as well. Especially if you move into detail and expand the possibilities of what you just did.

- Track and edit selection linked will allow you to do stuff like include other tracks into that selection. Move them around to other tracks etc etc ...
- combined with the variety of other, way more convenient ways to navigate through your session from the controller then clicking the mouse pointer it can in many ways be faster ... and I do mean A LOT faster the trying to do the same thing with the mouse. hit the '*' key and enter the position you want to be at on the numeric keypad for example.
- play around with the zoom possibilities the jogwheel has in combination with navigating through the session. The velocity of the wheel is linked to the zoom setting which is great because it both visually helps you to quickly spot the place where you want to be wehen zoomed all the way out in a big session and the fact that your cursor position remains centered when you use the wheel to zoom in then allows you to maintain the same 'feel' to precisely locate the exact point your aming at.
- In sessions with high track counts you can bring up the track within the edit window view by control + selecting the track from the channel strip , which then at the same time has put the cursor ON that track, ready for wheel selection / navigation.
- All this doesn't only apply to moving around regions. You can apply this to whatever parameter you like. copy / move automation for any parameter for example. Hold control + command and touch whatever fader or knob parameter your want to bring up in the edit window and start 'joghweel editing' that parameter.

It kinda all comes down to getting the feel of it in combination with the so many other things the controller can do really.

Maybe some day we'll see things like actually sticking a region to the wheel. I hope so. In the meantime what it allready can do by being intuitive about it is not half as bad as it might look at first sight. It is definately worth taking a closer look at and experimenting around with for a couple of hours.
