Default drum loops

Do any of you use drum loops without a sampler? Can you cut and paste just using your ear? can you sync up with midi?

Have you all had better luck over the internet or buying cd's?

thanks.

badperson,
I do it in much of my stuff. I have collected a huge amount of snares, kicks, hats, cyms, etc....
And often, for intricate parts(say, some hihat parts), I will play it on a Midi track, then lay an Audio track just under the Midi track, and match Audio samples to the Midi notes.
Once you get used to it, it's a breeze.

I haven't gone sample 'hunting' on line in a while (haven't needed to), but just by using key words, like 'WAV', 'Drum samples', etc, you should be able to find some decent samples with which to work.

Let me know if I can help further..... ~Roy

Is what you are talking about drum samples of individual drums (snare, kick, etc. ) that you trigger with your midi controller, or a 4 bar sample that you loop?

thanks.

i use loops a lot. first i choose the loops that i want to use (by style or tempo or whatever - they're grouped into "sessions"). then i import them into my PT session and preview them from the region bin. just alt+click on the region in the region bin to preview. then i drag them onto my loop track in grid mode.

if my session tempo is different from the loop tempo, i drag them all onto the track and time stretch them first to match the tempo of my session.

all my loops are home made grassroots loops...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">i made them. i went to a local studio with a drummer friend and we did a whole bunch of beats with different tempos and styles then i brought the sessions home for mixdown and chopped them up into 1 and 2 bar loops...

total cost was about $200 for the studio time plus my time in mixing and chopping... just be sure to get yourself a good drummer!

so you import, say, a 4 bar wav file into a pro tools session, then using grid mode copy and paste, placing the individual regions by ear?

I'm going on vacation on Saturday. I thought I'd burn a few sessions on cd and download pro-tools free and play around with them.

thanks

by ear? sort of. my grid matches the loops. i make sure they're the same tempo. that way, the end of the loop always lines up with the grid perfectly (sometimes 1 sample off when the tempo makes a bar an odd number of samples).

i preview them in the region bin then drag them onto the track. sometimes i cut up the loops to get or make fills, then drop them in place where its appropriate.

there is a semi-recent post regading this topic. I cant remember the topic...heck it may have been my post even, but it contains several links to websites that contain a heck of a lot of waves of drum loops. I will see if I can locate that post if I have time. I came up with a whole cd of some pretty good loops, edited and ready to go, and best of all FREE. The only price I paid was having to endure a bunch of pop-up ads.
