Default Pro tools 8.0.4 windows 7 keeps crashing

I just installed pro tools 8.0.4 update (after installing pro tools 8 on my new laptop--which is using windows 7 x64)--did everything "correctly" i think, didnt connect mbox 2 during 8 installation, waited for 8.0.4 update to do it. Now I've got pro tools up and running but it keeps crashing or going to blue screen. managed to get it to record and play back for about 10 seconds but since then my computer refuses to co-operate and has crashed the last 10 times I have opened a file and tried to work with it.
please help!

Windows users need to provide a Sandra report

- Please - Use SiSoftware's Sandra Lite application to generate a full system profile:

www.sisoftware.co.uk

Under SiSoftware Sandra, click on "Download & Buy" to download the free Sandra Lite version or purchase other versions. After installing Sandra, click on the 'Hardware' tab and run the 'Computer Overview', then copy and paste into your post here on the DUC.

The more information you can provide, the easier it will be for Tech Support and other users to assist you - take the time now to document everything you can and you'll save time in the long run. We can't express enough the importance of describing everything in extreme detail - remember, no one here can see how your gear is configured, so we need an accurate description by you to get a clear picture. The better we can envision your setup, the easier it will be to troubleshoot.

If you have been referred to this thread and reply without providing the information requested above, including the Sandra report for Windows users, your post is very likely to be given lower priority in favor of those who have provided complete information. __________________

I have been having similar problems. I am a brand new first time user and I just installed Pro Tools. It keeps crashing upon launch.

I followed all of the install instructions, restarted my computer. When I clicked on the Pro Tools icon and launched the program, it crashed while launching showing a loading bar that didn't move for a long time. When I went to force quit it, I got the blue screen of death. I tried opening the program and it froze while starting up again, giving me the blue screen, again.

I uninstalled the whole program then reinstalled it, but the same thing happened.

here are my specs:

Default Re: Pro tools 8.0.4 windows 7 keeps crashing

I have set up 2 LE Systems here in the past week. I had a similar problem with one of them but found if I went thru and did most of the tuning guide especially DEP setting and all seems well. no crashes any more. The are not on laptops though but but HP z400 desktops with DIGI002 racks.
My suggestion is to try loading Pro Tools with the Mbox connected. Both versions 8.0 and 8.0.4. If that does not work definitley go thru the tuning guide. After that I would reload OS especially if it was a preloaded machine. They load a lot of usless stuff that have some processes still running.
Anyway hope this was helpful, good luck.

Be sure to ensure it isn't a plugin.

This looks very strange to me:

"Total Memory : 4GB DDR3 SO-DIMM
Channels : 1
Memory Bus Speed : 2x 532MHz (1GHz)

Memory Module(s)
Memory Module : Hynix (Hyundai) HMT351S6BFR8C-H9 4GB DDR3 SO-DIMM PC3-10700S DDR3-1334 (9-9-9-25 4-34-10-5)
Memory Module
Memory Module"

You have 4 gb of DDR3 RAM, but only one stick of RAM? Does this mean the RAM is running in single channel mode?

Cheers,

I have no idea what single channel mode means

well, i checked the troubleshooting site and went through some of that stuff. didn't do much. I used the uninstaller that came with it (hadn't done this before, i had used the windows uninstall option, don't know if this made a difference. my theory is i may have denied something during install that windows remembered until i uninstalled it the last time) and reinstalled it a fourth time.... and it worked. hooray!
no crashing or blue screen

thanks for your help anyways everybody!

Right off the bat, you need to install 8.0.4 from scratch. If you install an earlier version and then upgrade to 8.0.4, you'll have left over files. You can also disable DAE to help and also disable desktop composition.

8.0.4 is an update only. The OP needs to run the installer for either 8 or 8.0.3(these are full installers) first. Then, I would skip 8.0.4 and go with 8.0.5, because 8.0.4 has a major timing issue with audio placement. I would also double the RAM with a second stick that is the exact same part number as the first stick(4GB of RAM is dead minimum for operating Windows 7). I would also remove the current RAM, put the new stick in that slot and move current stick to the other slot(just in case, the BSOD is caused by the RAM being not seated all the way, or having dirty contacts....yes, I realize this is a stretch, but you never know)
