Default Re: Midi Input Port 'None'

Ok. I've done the following trouble shooting steps.

1. Prior to install, I made sure my system was optimized per instructions on digidesigns. No problem. It records fine, just no midi.

2. Reinstall. I installed PT7.x from the disc received with the new OO3 rack fact +. Installed PT8. Found not apparently midi capable. Uninstall. Reinstall 7.x from disc to check if working under that version. Again no midi ports listed in Midi setup. Reinstall PT8.

3. Perform disc install then upgrade from downloaded file onto family quad core desktop. No optimization steps. Just an install to see if midi ports available and not a problem on more than one system. OO3 rack with ports selectable in Midi Setup. Obviously, something intrinsic to laptop itself, not install program or upgrade.

4. Thought 4 pin firewire port may have some issue as alluded to with certain Macs on digidesigns website and got a ExpressCard Firewire Card with 6 pin connector. Model was recommended on Digidesign site. Still no midiports in midi setup, but PT8 works flawlessly otherwise.

5. Internet search for answers. Join Digi User Conference.

6. Attend to DAE files and preferences. Although I didn't expect these to be a problem, I did delete them per the post regarding troubleshooting.

7. I did not reinstall Pace drivers. Thought this unlikely factor.

8. Downloaded Tech Support Utility, running Sandra to respond.

9. Contemplating entering a service agreement with unholy minions and promising first born, but that seems a drastic step to take at the moment. Think?

I'll post Sandra results in follow up thread.

Have you tried disabling these, as well as your built in sound card and any other extraneous hardware, per the info in the General Troubleshooting thread?

Also, in the System Configuration Utility, is the MMERefresh service running (checked) in the Startup Items or System Services tabs?

When I use the computer and the OO3 I disable any process that could potentially cause a problem, this includes the wifi. I'll disable everything not neccessary to the process. I don't expect I disabled the Ethernet card.

The MMREfresh does show up in the sys config and appear to be running/startup. I checked using the config utility.

So... I was having this problem (Vista, digi003Rack, PT8.0 from the download). I was going to look and see if there were any install options I didn't choose, so I restarted the setup utility. I chose "repair install" and let it do its thing. Now my MIDI port is available again.... I Don't know how long it will stay, but it's here for now

Interesting. I'm glad that worked for you. I attempted the same thing after I installed the original disc version to see if the upgrade was the problem. No luck. I'll attempt again, but sounds kinda flaky that it would repair or install incorrectly.

Ok. Practically anything not used has been disabled. MMRefresh is running. I've clean all things up.

ProTools does start slightly, but noticably, faster. But, sadly, no midi input/output noted in Midi Setup.

I think it may be time to call tech support by phone - it sounds like you may have defective MIDI ports...

I'll call. Although, when I have a midi device connected to the OO3, the 'In' light on the OO3 flickers when I have the midi device send information.

Furthermore, if the ports were bad, why would they show up and be selectable in midi setup on other computer I used to test for that very issue?

It seemed to me, if the ports were bad and the issue was intrinsic to the unit, the exact same issue would afflict any system I plugged them into, not just my laptop. I'll get the desktop I used to test if the midi ports were selectable and see if the ports actually pass info via midi into ProTools on that system. Mainly as I think it's not the unit, but some interface issue with my laptop.

That way I can save the trouble of sending a perfectly good unit back as opposed to hunting down the interface problem.
