Default HELP ME!!! cabling my New Pro Control and HD3 system!

hi everyone

i just got an HD3 system with some extras and
would like to know the best way to do the cabling.

i'm kind of burned out after building the studio from scratch
2 months straight (7 days a week non stop)
my brain is in need of some PRO help,
so if anyone can help me out with this matter that would be great.

i'll be doing basically some
Tracking, Mixing, Video Editing and Pre- Production
any comments are welcomed!,

i've called digidesign customer service and my supplier but honestly i don't think the cables are the right ones.

there's an option of using a patchbay as well

here's what i have
(please let me know if there's a better way to do the cabling)

~ Pro Control 24 Faders & Edit Pack
~ 192 I/O with A/D expansion card
~ MIDI I/O
~ PRE I/O
~ SYNC I/O
~ Glyph Trip (2) 36GB Cheetahs, VXA, CD-R
~ MAC Dual 1.25 G4 (Dual Boot)
~ Apple 23" Cinema Display
~ Groove Tubes VIPRE
~ Yamaha NS-10's with Hot House One Thousand Power Amp
~ Mackie HR-824
~ Behringer Powerplay Pro Headphone Amp
~ Furman AR power conditioner
~ Bass POD
~ POD XT
~ Neumann M149
~ KORG Triton

this is what i have planned as for cabling it
there are 4 digi cables so far
(Please let me know if i'm in the right path here!!!)

~ Speakers:
NS-10 --> DB-25 to XLR Males (Mains in P Control)(power amp)
Mackies ---> 3/4 Alt + (NO IDEA in cables)

~ Pro Control
DB-25 to DB-25R (Reverse)
Out of 192 into Pro Control Audio 1 or 2 (need help)

~ VIPRE
XLR to DB-25
VIPRE out to 192 In (1 to 8 or 9 to 16)

~ PRE I/O
DB-25 to DB-25
PRE out to 192 (1 to 8 or 9 to 16)

~ Triton
MIDI I/O
Triton MIDI out to MIDI I/O in
Audio out of the Triton to Input of ??????

Behringer unit
how can i patch it thru the system and where to?

maybe this post could help anyone starting like me to get it going or maybe to help reconfigure someone's else that it's planning in doing so.

thanks for your help,

Got a very similar set-up to the one you are struggling with...hope these tips help...

1. Would really recommend using a patch bay...the more you hard wire the more limited you are when it comes to tracking sessions and routing stuff around.

2. You are on the right lines with monitoring. Use the 192 analogue out 1/2 for your main stereo mix. Route this through Pro Control Main in L/R using the D-sub connectors on the back. You may have to get the soldering iron out for this because simply connecting the d-sub out from the 192 will not give you the signal path you are after. I had to make up my own cables for this. For monitoring output, connect the main monitors to the procon main out and alternate monitors to the procon 'alt out'.
This is much easier if done throu a normalised patchbay. You can simply bring all the ins/outs of the 192 and Pro Control to the patchbay and normalise/patch accordingly. You will find that you have to split or remake cables otherwise.

3. For the powerplay, use a pair of outputs of the 192 as your cue send and route this into the 'aux in' of the procontrol. Route the aux out of procontrol to the main input of the powerplay. THis gives you control over the cue send level from procontrol and allows use of the built in talkback. It may also be useful to put the 'aux ins' of the powerplay on the patchbay for more control over headphone mixes. You can the patch other 192 outputs to the individual amps of the powerplay for fine tuned cue mixes. Note that these are stereo inputs on the front so you will need splitter cables at some point along the line.

4. The PRE could be wired straight into the 192 using d-sub to d-sub cable but once again you are limiting your I/O options. would be much better to bring both the 192 ins and the pre outs to a patch bay (normalised to each other). This way the signal path straight into pro tools is still there without patching but you still have the 192 inputs available if you are not using all the pre amps.
The inputs to the PRE should be brought to a patchbay or stage box ideally.

5. If you have two analogue cards in the 192, the triton can be plugged into the second 8 inputs (9-16). Once again..recommend a patchbay as this keeps 192 ins available.

6. In terms of a patchbay I would recommend the type where you just plug jacks into the back. THat way you can use 'd-sub to 8 balanced jack cables' to simply 'plug-in' the patchbay. Normalise as much as possible and you will still have a hard wired signal path but with all I/O's available. You should be able tyo fit it all in 2 48 way jack patchbays.

7. Look carefully at the wiring diagrams for the procontrol d-subs..they had me confused for a bit but you should be a ble to work it out. If you are using d-sub to jack looms you can easily patch procontrols main, aux and alt I/O's to their intended destination.

8. Make sure your clocking is solid. Use SYNC as the master clock and use BNC's to loop this to the 192. Also worth taking a 'word clock out' from either 192 or SYNC to clock the Triton and any other gear with digital outs. In Protools I/O section you can scarifice any analogue ins for a co-axial or optical S/PDIF input..may be an option for connecting the Triton or CD Player.

9. Connect CD PLayer to procontrol SRC1 in..really handy for referencing.

Hope this helps...e-mail me with any more indepth queries..
Our set-up is

HD3 with 192I/O and 96I/O
