Default Pro tools quits unexpectedly "solution"

At least it was for me, and it was NOT found on THIS site by my eyeballs. But it bears mentioning.

Recent Mac systems operate with a 64bit processor by default, and Pro Tools is a 32Bit program. They will "somewhat" work together for a week or so, but with some wonky results. DAW errors, tracking lines are off by an inch, and eventually the crashes come on

To put your Mac in 32 bit mode, hold down the "3" and the "2" key together while booting up. It will stay in 32 bit mode from then on.

To go back to 64bit mode, hold down the "6" and the "4" at the same time while booting up and you are back(why, I dont know, if you are using pro tools)

That took me 2 weeks to solve, but my updated LE8.0.4cs is working like a champ.

I dont wanna be a geek, I just wanna make music....

Mac I7, 2.93ghz, 4GB ram, MBox2

P.S.//// 32 bit mode only uses so much RAM, so if you have 4 GB of ram, YOU ARE GOOD TO GO! Do not waste your money on bigger chips(like I Did)

Until you are running 64bit Music Software, save your money for bribing the A&R guy's friend's friend. LOL

This is a bit misleading.... There are plenty of reasons for having more than 4GB RAM... It's certainly not a waste to have more than 4GB....

In fact 16GB is pretty much a starting point if you're using a large VI template.

Kontakt, Spectrasonics and many other VI's (plus of course VEPro) break the 4GB RAM limit....

I'd even say it's a bad practice. The OS alone can hog an additional GB or two which would leave less for ProTools. We've made a general rule not to go below 6GB even in studios which don't use VIs.

Like I wrote, I am not a geek, and will surely be corrected for my poor advise, I am new to this and I got excited by the usual gossip.

Thanks for clearing that up.

But I am still crashing with the 32pros/32soft deal, but ONLY when I try to open files made and saved with the 64pros/32soft set up. So far, new files are running OK.

Would this lead me to believe that the bugs from the 64/32 set up are saved on those old files?

What am I not getting here, besides NO live tech support, or music mixed down. I was an OS 10.5 with the Pro Tools 8/MBox2 package, and all was kinda running smootly, but with DAW errors, and the dreadful day I thought I should update my OS. I am a stupid Windows user, and new to Mac, so I double deserve the boot!

I'd pay GOLD for someone in the West Palm Beach, Florida area, to come in and fix this mess, because I am having a hard go of it, and fear shelling out more money for the Pro 9 might be in vain.

Sorry for all the hoopla,

Regards,

Adam

My fault for believing an Apple geek, and I guess I need another $400 to get to 8GB, and maybe $249 for the 9 upgrade, I should work someday

Thank you Eric for correcting me.
