Default midi controller with PT10

Hi, I have just added a Novation SL MKII controller to my protools set up.

Is there any extra set up recquired for PT10 for using controllers?

The controller is moving parameters within protools plug ins / instruments correctly but if i put protools into record and try record the controller movements it dosent record anything.

i'm sure I have seen this working before where after recording and ajusing the controller the adjustents/movments display in an automation track.

anyhelp?

silly question maybe but have you set it in the periphics?

Plugin your controller.

Start pro tools

Choose Setups > Peripherals and click MIDI Controllers.

In the MIDI Controllers panel click on the first empty slot on the left beside #1,#2,#3,#4.

Select the the controller in the pop up menu that will appear.

Choose the source and destination ports for your MIDI controller. These should correspond to the input and output ports to which your MIDI controller is connected. Choose the MIDI Controller’s source port from the Receive From pop-up menu.

I have already set the controller up on the controller page.

The controller is already controlling faders and plug in / instrument parameters.

The issue is when I want to record plug in / instrument parameter movement.
PT isn't recording anything

How are you trying to record these movements?

Are you recording in the same way you would record audio/midi, or are you setting the automation to 'write' on the particular track/s you are trying to make the changes to?

Also have you checked the CC's? I had a similar problem with Arturia's CS-80v when trying to write particular parameter information. The parameters I was trying to automate were not set to a particular CC in Pro Tools this meant that Pro Tools didn't know what I was trying to write.

I have for example been trying to record a cut off frequency on a soft synth.

The Novation SLMK2 / automap already maps the parameter of the cut off i can move in live but when i put protools into record or write (either one) it dosent record anything.

I have double checked my midi inputs and controller settings in protools, all fine.

I've previously acheived this a while ago with a another controller without any problems.

Shot in the dark, but try enabling automation on the plugin first. If that helps, there is a checkbox in Preferences for automatically enabling all plugins.

how do you mean enable automtion for the plug in first?

I know in each plug in window you can assign / add plug in controls .
But though this just added the automation tracks ready for you to edit?

Ok i've got it fixed!!!

Ok with help of support

What i did is install automap 4, (i had actually tried automap 4 previously)
now once installed updated the OS / templates from the automap server.
(make sure the option to protect write in the global settings on the MKII are off)

Now when i open protools the plug in's automap and the learn features work but in order to record the automation unlike
a standard midi controller you have to tell the plug in which parameters you want to record.
you do this under the auto tab in each plug in

Once you have done this you can record the automation / parameter changes by dropping the track into write, touch or
the other usual methods you use to write automation.
It wont record if you try just enabling record on the track like you do with a standard midi controller.

So what sthe preference setting to auto add each plug-in auto parameters rather than adding them manually??

On a Mac it's in PT Prefs>Mixing Tab under the Automation section, check "Plug-in Controls Default to Auto-Enabled".
