Default Need help with update decisions

I am running a Macbook (bought in late 2005) with a 2.0 Ghz Core 2 duo processor and 2 Gb RAM running Tiger 10.4.1 and Pro Tools LE 7.3.1 on an Mbox2. I have had no complaints.

My problem is that to get updates for Ipod touch, I have to update to Leopard, or Snow Leopard. I would not mind the update, except that I will also have to update Pro Tools, and according to the compatibility chart, there may be some nonsupport issues with older Macs?

I know I will eventually have to update the OS, but this will get really expensive. Any thoughts?

My 1.82 duo is slower than yours, and that should be fine with leopard, my buddy guitarist runs the Ipad with Leopard and he has the same machine I have.

Which version of Pro Tools are you using? Is it the original or have you updated since you bought the original?

7.3.1 will not work in Leopard or Snow Leopard. If you're going to upgrade, you might as well go up to PT9. But that requires Snow Leopard. You might want to check that your computer is okay for that.

I know my seagate HD with the 912 chipset would be compatible with PT 9.0, but will my 2nd gen M box2 be compatible as well?

Yeah you should be fine. And fwiw I think it's only $29 for the snow leopard upgrade. You can skip 10.5 altogether. I just read a post were someone was running PTLE 7.4 on 10.6 but imo that might be a bit of a risk. You can also crossgrade to PT9 for $249. So for less than $300 you can have a lot more than you have now. And IMO that really isn't very expensive for what you'll gain. You'll get ADC and the ability to run any interface you want. Including no interface at all (onboard sound).

For the record, the upgrade to Snow Leopard is only $29 if you're upgrading from Leopard. If you upgrade from anything earlier, you actually have to buy the Mac Box Set for $129. There's been some controversy about this. Apparently the Snow Leopard upgrade looks for Leopard on your system and won't work if it doesn't see it. I think some people have gotten around this by wiping their drive clean (after backing up). Whether that's legal or not is another question.

Oh okay. Yeah I upgraded from leopard on mine but did do a clean install. So I know you can do that but didn't realize the updater looks for a leopard installation. Def didn't mean to suggest anyone do anything that might not be legal.
