Default HD-Madi/HD-Native Qs for Tony Cariddi

Madi opens up an easy interface option for PT users who feed traditional consoles IE: AMS, Harrison, Euphonix, SSL, Studer etc...

A few years ago we ran a Nuendo system with 2 RME Madi cards...they say you can use 3. But we ran fine with 128 tracks. So the in and out track count could be 192 each way at 48K.

How would you do that with HD-MADI and the new ProTools hardware?
Stick with PT HD not Native or use multiple Native cards??

In case it isn't clear, understand that HD MADI is a 64 channel I/O box. It offers two groups of 32 channels, each running on a discrete Digilink connector.

HD Native is limited to 64 channels. So the most you can connect is one HD MADI interface. You can't run multiple HD Native cards.

As far as regular HD, you have to remember that each HD card can only handle 32 channels of I/O. Therefore, you need two HD cards for each 64 channel HD MADI interface. You would need four HD cards and two HD MADI interfaces for 128 channels.

Native is only intended as entry level HD. You can only use one card (at this point), for a maximum I/O of 64 channels.

You would need a TDM system for more than that. I'd wait to see what the new line of TDM cards will have to offer...
