Default Is Sync I/O necessary for file based workflow?

Building a couple of new rooms and doing all file based work. No capturing from tape, no chasing sync from tape, no laying back to tape. All files will be delivered to us as Pro Res 422 (Proxy) from FCP edit suite.

I do not need a Sync I/O any more and we just lock PT to internal sync right? We then bounce to QT video for delivery encoding as H264 for client approvals. Final audio with pops sent to video house for layback to tape.

I think in this work flow, a sync I/O nor a house sync reference is no longer needed. Just want to make 100% sure. We are working on Black Magic Intensity Pro cards and PT HD Native systems on 8 core Mac Pros.

Thanks a lot and any advice will be appreciated.

Only time you would need it is if you were to do an ISDN adr session that needed to lock to picture.

how do you lock to B&B then? your video must therefore surely never be locked to frame edges and can therefore be up to a frame out randomly.

Can the Intensity Pro even resolve to an external reference? I didn't think it had the capability.

Intensity can't take external reference. Why would you need to align to frame edges when dealing with files? Sync this accurate is only really needed in old workflows.

This statement is absurd. Tom is just trying to stir up the pot again.

I don't think it is about "file based" vs. "tape based". I think there are two questions. First, will you ever need to synchronize to another piece of video-centric equipment? That includes many things besides tape decks. If the answer is No Never, the second question is, Are you happy with AV sync that is not frame accurate? As already stated, you'll never know when you're seeing something that is in sync or out of sync by some amount that will be up to one frame. If that is good enough for your purposes then don't get a SyncIO.

I'm not trying to "stir the pot" as you put it. My point is that Intensity Pro is an Avid qualified device and it doesn't have a reference in, therefore for the setup it is likely to be used in, having ref isn't overly important.

The QuickTime is being played out by Pro Tools in time with the audio from Pro Tools. What would having external sync add?

When I've asked the guys from Blackmagic about this, they've said that setup would be fine, and many people do use it absolutely fine.

If you have lots of video equipment and VTRs, then yes, ref is required. If audio and video are coming from the same machine, then not really.

It was the "old workflows" statement that set me off. If you meant to say that for sync'ing the "new workflow" (using PT with BM, both are not genlocked and therefore sync is unkown and variable) is not as good as "old workflows" (which required genlocked hardware and were generally capable of audio-video sync within microseconds), then I agree with you.
