Default Earliest Polyphonic Music Manuscript Found

The earliest known piece of polyphonic music has been discovered. I thought some of you might find this of interest. This tidbit from the article caught my eye:
Quote:
As well as its age, the piece is also significant because it deviates from the convention laid out in treatises at the time. This suggests that even at this embryonic stage, composers were experimenting with form and breaking the rules of polyphony almost at the same time as they were being written.
And we've been breaking the rules and improvising ever since!!! I suspect whoever wrote down this piece would be pushing the MIDI envelope if he were doing it today! Rock on!!

And thus began (the long journey towards) multitrack recording.

That's quite a find. Should've known it would have a Germany connection, everything they do seems to be groundbreaking and top quality.

Haha...Speaking of that, if you haven't seen it or read it, I HIGHLY recommend Perfecting Sound Forever by Greg Milner. It is a fabulous well-written and informative history of recording music and sound.
