Import Audio from Current Movie causes crash?
HI.
Been having a problem with PT "Unexpectedly Quitting" on me since upgrading to v7 (currently running v7.1cs5 on OSX10.4.5 Dual 2Gig HD2Accel 2x192 I/O)...I think finally figured the sequence of events that causes it to happen 80% of the time. New session (in this case 24bit 44.1 .BWAV). Import Quicktime movie. Create 2 (or more) mono tracks. Import Audio from Current Movie. Drag Audio onto mono tracks. Hit Spacebar to play...and Boom Pro Tools quits. When I hit "Save" before the last step, it still crashed, but when I re-open the session, re-import the audio (this time from the Audio Files folder since it made the conversion prior to the crash), drag into mono tracks, hit play everything fine. Anyone else experiancing this? Digi? Also posting this in the TDM on Mac forum. Thanks |

Re: Import Audio from Current Movie causes crash?
importing and converting. it seems I don't even have to drag the audio out of the Regions bin and into a track. After the import/conversion finishes, the next time I hit play (spacebar) the session will quit...no matter how much work I've done between the import and the play. Import...do nothing, hit play, PT quits. Import, drag from bin, cut in 4 new tracks, edit for an hour, hit play...PT quits. It does seem to trigger off the Import Audio from Current Movie function though.
thoughts? thanks in advance. |

Re: Import Audio from Current Movie causes crash?
Hi Mike,
First thing I would do is check with another movie. Your session might be 24 bit 44kHz but the standard for a QT Movie is usually set to 16 bit 48 kHz. When you go to import the "audio from current movie" a pop-up window will tell you at what settings the soundtrack is set to. It will also tell you in what format. Also are you opening this on an already existing session or a new session? If so try it in a new session with the same settings as the movie. It should be able to convert your movie but if the movie is an MPEG than it may have a muxed or embedded soundtrack. Check it out. Best Mitch

Re: Import Audio from Current Movie causes crash?
Tim/Mitch -
Thanks for the replies. To answer both of you, it happens with all movies. The embedded QT audio is 16B/48k, so I tried the same thing in a 16/48 session and...NO CRASH! This doesn't really solve my problem though, because I'm not going to convert all of my Audio to 16/48 just so I can safely import a Dialog guide track from the movie I'm using. Mike |

Re: Import Audio from Current Movie causes crash?
Glad you got it.
Work around Bro! Import the 16 bit 48 kHz to a new session. Then import that track from "Import Session Data" into your other session. I'm not sure why you are working at 24 bit 44.1 kHz anyway. Most video is edited at 16:48. I also work at 24:48 too. The other thing is that usually the guide track on QT is in stereo. So try importing into a stereo track. If it's just a guide track I usually ask from the video editor to give me a stereo track Dialogue Left, M&E Right. This way I can separate them into 2 mono tracks for better tracking. Also if you need to match cuts you can see them a lot more clearly. Hope something helps. Best, Mitch

Re: Import Audio from Current Movie causes crash?
Yah, that work around occurred to me, just wish it wasn't necessary.
Working at 24/44.1 'cause that's what the composer is delivering to the dub stage. When I asked one of his assistants "why?" the response I got was..."he got sick of so many different formats so he picked one and stuck with it." I do get Dia left and FX right (no music 'cause that's what I'm editing) on the QT file. At the end of the day there are plenty of workarounds.... |
