Re: How Long
I really hate to be facetious but the answer can vary. There are some that mix as the track and some mix as a totally separate procedure. I'm in the latter camp even if I have just two or three tracks to deal with.
I never consider a mix finished in one session and the reason is ear fatigue. Keep hearing the same piece of music over & over & over and you lose sight of not only the sound but what you wanted from that sound. Typically I'll go at least three mix sessions before I begin to consider it close enough for a client. Now if said client wants something different that adds to it. Then if I have to also 'master' said music while dealing with a number of separate pieces of music I might find that certain pieces just won't fit with others sound-wise. Then I'll go back and re-mix. There are some things I can fix at 'mastering' that even though I have the tools and know-how to do so I won't do it. The worst for me is corellation errors. Sometimes when I fix those it sucks the life out of the tune. Then I go back to the client and ask what they want. |

Re: How Long
Well said^^^ Back in the days of analog, it was pretty easy and we just figured one hour per minute of music. These days, there are so many options(and often so much editing) its a lot tougher to pin down. I figure 3-4 hours for the average pop song(but sometimes it takes double that)

Re: How Long
2-4 hours, but as Dave eluded to, there is a lot of editing that seems to be "expected" of mix engineers these days, so it varies.
