On your new stereo track, couldn’t you just show the automation lane for the left pan, copy it, show the automation lane for the right pan, paste it (possibly paste to fill or paste to current automation, the exact verbiage escapes me) but Shft+Opt+Cmd+V? It’s under the “paste special” menu.
