Well we use outboard gear most of the time for saturation etc (Looptrotter gear) and SSL Fusion for example but HEAT does work. I agree it is older than my youngest sister but still a great sounding effect and total integration into each track is always nice. But yeah $199 + taxes etc ain’t cheap and I would say that there are several new plugins that really does sound GREAT and are less than half of what HEAT would be but there are those who swear by it and to each his/her own as they say. We have had HEAT for ages and sometimes it does add a lot of niceties to a song
Again True Iron from Kazrog is super awesome and cost about 40-50 USD and really does sound super.
