If you like the compressed snare sound up to the release, then why not copy the snare down to a new fader for the release, and treat it differently than the rest of the track.

As was mentioned above, you may want to trigger a sample to help the snare. The nice thing about that approach is that you can compress it as much as you want without affecting the cymbals.
