If he really clearly does not know how to answer your question, then the first thing I doubt is using ADAT to begin with. It is very easy to set up AES/EBU for 96k tracking so that's my best bet. Or he's using ADAT @48k and doing a real-time sampling rate conversion (but then he's not really recording 96k signals).
