APFS is a necessary switch for Apple if they are to have a file system capable of supporting a robust cloud platform. HFS+ has time resolution of a second - not viable for in-time synchronisation across multiple devices (APFS has nano second time resolution). APFS has many more features you would expect of a modern FS (security, archiving, snapshots, etc.). Also the dropping of support for "old" hardware I suspect is to do with macOS+APFS support for the latest thunderbolt with SSD support for trim and booting (not supported in UEFI 32 bit on SSD). Interesting times ...
