Default 96 i/o crackling and goes quiet??

I was experiencing the same exact problem with my 96i/o +96i + sync i/o. 96i/o set as primary, 96i as expansion & loop sync master set to the 96i/o. In my case, I only experienced this only when I used my master dynamics controller & reverb rack gear routed through separate aux tracks. I seemed to fixing my issue by setting my channels I/O dB’s to -8dB as the interface run on 1.5v, routed master output through 96i/o through outputs 1-2 & set output levels to +4dB. Since I own a ProControl + fader pack, I routed my stereo mix outputs 1-2 through the ProControl inputs, rack gear through Pro Control sources inputs 3-4 & 5-6. My rackgear inputs are fed from corresponding 96i/o output channels & the now crackle is gone.. as a result, I now have minor latency on my PTHD3 rig.

Which leads me to this notion: crackling seem to be attributed to wrong dB levels, wrong signal routing & or the lack of optional control surfaces. I may be wrong but I seem to have corrected my issue as I have indicated above.
