Paint the piece of wood; make it an art project if you will. Think Jackson Pollock.
Here in the US they build standard walls with studs on 16 inch center. That's so you can have a standard 4x8 foot sheet of plywood secured to a stud towards each side edge (assuming a vertical placement of said wood). My house is a bit different as I think the builders were drunk. In the same wall studs can vary from 16" to 17" to 18" and inbetween center to center.
