Which model iMac is this? How do you have everything connected? Which OS version? What type of drives?

Typical symptoms of 6090 errors are firewire based - bad cables, too many devices in the chain, a chain that's too long, failure of ports, etc.

It could be that you have your playback engine settings for processor usage set too high - try it at 80% or so.
