Don't paste use the pencil and write in the notes - or use MIDI merge. MIDI merge is terrific as long as you keep track of what you're doing. I use it all the time because for some reason Pro Tools won't record the first or last notes sometimes when I define a block to record in. But that's recording live over the existing drum or whatever track.
That's what I recommend. Use MIDI merge and just record the separate drum parts in separate passes.
