Re: TRAVAN Tape Backup - compress audio backup or not ?
Audio files won't compress... As I understand it, data compression is based on series or patterns in files. Since audio files are constantly variable, or have no constant pattern (ones, or zeros) a compression algorythm has no way to work.
Even "silence" in the audio file is really recording low level stuff.
So, if you did decide to compress, you'd find that the end result wouldn't be much different than what you started with.
It might compress some of the fade files or EDLs, but not enough to mess with.
So the short answer is no, don't compress. It's not worth it.
