I would just use the digital inputs and get better preamps. Suggestions:
For the SPDIF input; API A2D(killer) or ART Digital MPA(shockingly good for the price).
For the lightpipe input; Midas XL-48( it bested several Neve/API clones on drums) or Focusrite ISA-428 Mk II w/digital card(its a 4-channel unit with 4 line inputs to the digital card for any outboard preamp. A great excuse to get a lunchbox and load it up).

Remember that the 002 is old and unsupported(so its going to stop working one of these days). All the above suggestions will still be useful for years, and with any DAW. Of course, if you just like to tinker, that's all fine, but you might get more "bang for buck" by building some DIY preamps(CAPI and Hairball Audio being 2 great options).
