Default Clarification on subscriptions and renewals

I’ve been using protools a long time. I’ve not upgraded since 12.5.2 and was thinking I might do it for some new useful features etc however I’m a bit stuck on the new pricing plan they have. From what I’ve been researching the renewals each year are crazy money and if your subscription runs out, you can’t use protools.

I understand you pay for a year of updates, fixes etc but with the money you’ve spent on that full year, surely you would be capped at whatever version you stopped subscribing to. And not basically Just shut down and unable to use the software.

Can anyone clarify if I’m understanding this right. If I have a perpetual licence and I take a yearly upgrade, renewal plan. IF I choose not to renew the following year for reasons, I’m happy with that current version. I would then lose my whole daw unless I re-subscribe at £100-£200 for another year?
