External drives MUST be firewire, and if you have a cardbus slot and get an APPROVED fw card (with a TI chipset) , AND an approved external drive (with an Oxford chipset) you should be find. USB drives do NOT have reliable bandwidth for moving audio around. However, if you have e-sata, that would work even better.
