The PT10 licence is surrendered and replaced with a 'bundle' of two licences, one for PT10 and one for PT11. The point of this is that the two licences are tied together, you can't separate them.

If the PT10 licence was just left there and a PT11 licence was provided additionally, it would then be possible to put the two licences on different iLoks and run them on different computers at the same time. That's not what Avid wants when you've only purchased one instance of Pro Tools.
