Pro Tools 8 might work on your Mac. You can read posts here, as you have apparently, about how others have managed to get this working.
You need a DVD drive, you can try downloading the 8.0.3 installer from Avid's web site but that wants to see a DVD install disc in a drive. Easiest path there is to go buy an external USB DVD drive. I would just buy the one Apple offers.
Not supported by Avid means not supported, not known not to work. But not supported also means Avid is not going to waste their time testing against new OS releases and new hardware and answering questions like you are asking.
The other option is just upgrade to Pro Tools 10/11, which I would do in a heartbeat for all the improved capabilities.
