So I checked the cable and it was OK with a disk. BUT I think it may have been lose at the SC48 end. Anyway - replugged the cable and adapters and reinstalled the FW drivers and now PT9 seems to see the FWx - so this is a step forward.
Now when I start a session I get the error "The current playback engine does not support a sample rate if 44.1kHz"
Any ideas on this one?

Yes, of course. You must create a 48 khz session, not 44.1 as VENUE runs @ 48 khz fixed. You can aslo try to use VENUE link. This can be used to create sessions with channel info and more from VENUE. It would be helpful for you to see Live Recording Guide.
