Well probably because the file is too voluminous for the consumer compared to the low quality mp3 that they are used to. A 24 bit 96 k song can easily take up to 50 megs and more for a 3 to 4 minute song. While the mp3 only takes 2 to 5 megs depending on the encoding quality.
So on a consumer stand point where they want to stuff the max amount of songs into their player, having 24/96 files ain't for them.
