As a RedHat Certified System Administrator, I must say this is bad advise. Root user is a kind of god for UNIX system and should only be used for maintaining the OS and not installing something trivial such as end-user software for a regular user.

Mountain Lion has a Gatekeeper that needs to be turned off for the time being.
