Default INPUT GAIN behind speakers

Is this a 'play it by ear' type of thing or should you do as the manual says for optimal response? When I had my Mackie 824's, I remember having the input gain behind each speaker set to max, therefore keeping the 'control room' knob on my mixer very low.

In the manual for the Alesis M1mk2, they highly recommend keeping the input gain at 6 or 7. They don't say why, they just mention that one should never keep those values at maximum gain. Go figure...

So, is there a genereal rule to all this?
I experimented and found that having the input turned up to max delivered a slightly better, crisper sound, although it can be all psych, dunno, what's the conclusion from all you pros?

thanks
