Smart___ replies are not a part of a viable information source. You're not talking to a rookie all the time. If you would have read the post you would have noted the reference to the full version of ProTools. We were the first non-beta installation of ProTools back in 1990, and have been in the business for 30 years. I KNOW TO TURN THE SPEAKERS OFF! My inquiry was aimed specifically at a quirk of this software.

The PT Free is being used in an off-line suite for raw voice tracks. I found the problem is "latency" because of the way this version processes, and it's unavoidable. The "workaround" in the FAQ section is inadequate for this type of work.

As a suggestion to others with this problem, here is a better one:

When you need to hear playback of a track to do a punch in, (as in recording a long narration)
1) Open two audio tracks. One for playback, the other for recording.
2) Set the monitor fader on the record track to 0 and the playback track to a comfortable level.
3) Pot up the PT output on your console. (or plug in your headphones to the computer)
4) As you complete sections of the VO drag them down to the playback track and trim it back to your punch in point.
5) Set your pre roll time in the transport window.
6) Make sure the cursor is at your punch point. ( tab to the end )
7) Hit record, and the talent will hear the last few words previously recorded as a record cue and proceed without any "latency"

Gerald, THAT IS HOW A PRODUCTIVE BOARD PROVIDES USEFUL INFORMATION TO USERS!
