I think it is to do with economies of scale. Waves clearly can afford to sell the product low because they're most likely selling volumes of the product. The initial R&D has long been recouped and with a large portfolio relative overheads are low.

Smaller companies have smaller economies of scale and need higher retail prices.

The Arousor sounded good but didn't wow me. I'm not the biggest UAD fan but the UAD Distressor sounded slightly better to my ears over the rest. The Slate one lost a little of the bottom end as was slightly thin by comparison. Maybe the UAD just gave a little bottom end hype? Either way, all good options and sound pretty close.
