That was my understanding, not via core audio but by having it (S3) in your session the IO is there....

Right or wrong?

Now I feel like starting a support case
What does "having it in your session" mean? The S3 iO and control surface are completely separate animals. The IO is just a AVB interface. And again,... You cannot aggregate (e.g. CoreAudio Aggregate IO) anything with a TDM/HD interface. And the S3 is not Digilink/TDM so you cannot aggregate/join it that way either.

The IO is there really because this started out as a live controls surface tied to AVB stage racks. Going AVB may make lots of sense but Avid has kinda lost the thread with no innovation with it's legacy TDM/HD interfaces. So you now have fragments of two incompatible systems, TDM/HD interfaces and an AVB interface.

I expect the AVB interface in the S3 to be most often used as a stand-alone single interface for playback/mixing. And for that use it is provably pretty handy. And maybe one day if Avid or others deliver nice AVB products it can be aggregated with those.
