PT versions prior to v9 (so 8 & below) do not verify a licence via iLok. The Digi/Avid Audio Interface itself is the dongle which allows PT to run.
V9 up requires iLok, not sure about v10 but v11&12 need 2nd generation iLok.
V9 was the first version to break away from proprietary hardware hence the need for verification by other means than the Audio Interface as per earlier versions....ergo, introduction of needing iLok to run PT.
