I may be reading this wrong but it sounds like you've got your levels too hot before hitting the master? Are you monitoring pre or post fader? You certainly don't want to "limit" anything before giving your tracks to your mix engineer. On the flip side, you want to make sure your record level isn't too hot or there won't be much headroom for your mix engineer to work with.

If your record levels are fine and it's just your master fader that's seeing too much signal, a good "cheat" trick of mine is to select all tracks, bring EVERYTHING down by 5-10db, then unselect all tracks and bring the master back to unity. You never want to touch your master fader. It will lie to you.
