Beside recording orchestral work on location. I have never in the last 20 years had the need for more than 32 channels.

Symphony orchestras.
Recording live theatre.
My current show (see my sig line) has about 116 inputs, including 32 channels of playback from QLab. If I wanted to record it for a multitrack archive, I would have to bring out an entire HDx2 rig and pull the recording from the MADI stream. Or use something other than Protools.
