I think you're on the right track regarding the USB power. I noticed how high the MBox was drawing from the port as well.

One recommendation I've seen online from some iPad users is to get an external USB port hub with its own AC power adapter (iPads draw a lot of power too and many times don't recharge in regular PC USB 2.0 ports). These hubs are not very expensive (under $30). I may try this if I have any more issues and I'll post any results.

Note that these hubs do not produce more than the USB standard 500mA, but I guess they are more likely to provide power more reliably than the integrated USB ports on the laptop. It's similar to your idea of getting a new USB card.
