What that dealer is telling you is pure BS. Any daw will support multiple cpu chips. The issue may be that certain daws don't do well with using multiple cores (real or hyperthreaded) and by that is meant spreading out the load amongst the cores. PT can be a little thick-headed with regards to sharing the load amongst cores. That can be mitigated by spreading out the load.
By that I mean if you use samplers don't load up a single instance with a bunch of instruments but spread them out amongst multiple instances of the sampler. Or a multi-timbral vi like Omnisphere.
If you're looking for a 'new' machine and are comfortable with buying over the net I suggest taking a look at OWC (aka Macsales). They have a number of different cheesegrater MacPros any one of which should suit you. My current machine is a 2012 5,1 with 3.46 GHz hex core cpu and 48 gig ram. I juiced it up with a 1TB ssd on a pcie card as my boot drive. Plenty fast and capable with PT 11.3.2 running off 4TB sample and recording 7200 rpm spinners in the internal drive bays. Next upgrade when funds allow is a 2 TB ssd on a pcie card for samples.
