The fact you have a Pentium 4 and are trying to run PT LE 8 is an issue right off the get-go. You may/probably don't have enough CPU power to adequately run 8x.
Does the firewire card have a TI chipset?
Does the firewire enclosure have an Oxford chipset?
Just out of curiosity, why don't you have a second internal drive for audio?
You may want to get Windows XP squared away and tweaked before trying PT LE 8x.
Just a few thoughts.
