In my case the activity monitors shows Pro Tools at 150 % and the kernel_task at approx 50 % ('normal' audio session with some midi). As I learned the activity monitor shows 100% as a full processor core being used for a task.
So, Pro Tools is using 1,5 cores and the kernel_task 0,5 core. In total 2 cores from my i7 with 8 cores. I wouldn't call this an issue.

The kernel_task should normally be a fraction of that (typically between 5-20%). It also eats up RAM excessively. How much of your RAM is it using? Look at the "Real Mem" column.
If you have a new-ish computer and not running big sessions with lots of plugs and/or VI's, you may not run into problems. The bottom line for me is that big sessions that used to run fine are now choking.
