It's an issue with some Focusrite interfaces. My LS56 works as you describe. I used to have a Pro40 for my laptop rig as well ---> same issue. If I (occasionally) must crank the input gain up to 9.5 it's still super clean, so it doesn't really bother me. Not ideal, but not a deal-breaker for me. (In fact the first 2 channels of the LS56 has an emulation of a Neve 1073 pre, and it's pretty cool !!!)
