I finally got it to work doing this. Hold down "n" while starting PT (which I guess is standalone mode from what I've read). I pressed "n" before I launched PT and held it down until I got a dialog box asking to create a new session, etc. It started up no problem and asked what playback engine I wanted to use. Can create new sessions on start now and open up older sessions. I haven't had to start PT up using this process again since I did it the 1st time. Haven't gotten to put it through the ringer yet, but will re-post if I ever run into an error like this again. Hope this helps.
